WildVoiceStudio - Podcasting software and hosting

CSouthard asked through Twitter about Podcasting sites as podcastpeople is "playing up".
Remembered I had once saved a list of Podcasting tools and resources from Mashable.

Took another look at the list and found WildVoiceStudio which offers free download of a podcasting studio and free hosting for your podcasts - Very user friendly. Also includes free hosting, if you don't mind ads. Only disadvantges I have found so far, you need to have microsoft.net on your computer and you have to sign in to the site in order to create a podcast, (or maybe my pc was just playing up)

As I don't like ads when they're all pasted over my page, I came up with this solution. Created podcast in the free podcast studio app and uploaded directly from app to my page on the site. (The mp3 is also saved on your computer) Copied link to mp3 and pasted in Ning music player. Copied embed code for the Ning music player and added it to my blogger. Way easy!

Many teachers have expressed a desire to remove the Blogger navbar from their blogger blogs. This wish is based on the fact that by clicking on the "Next Blog" link can lead students to blogs with unsuitable content.

It is possible to completely remove the navbar - read on:

In order to set up the RSS for all comments on your blogger blog, click on:
Settings, Site Feed, Advanced Mode,

Make your choices from the options and save.

The URL for your feed will be http://YOURBLOGNAME.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default
change the part of the URL YOURBLOGNAME !

You will now be able to subscribe to all comments added to your blog.

If you wish to add a widget displaying the comments, the Blogger widget for this doesn't seem to work correctly, however it is possible to create widgets on other sites. The widget showing comments in the sidebar on this blog was created on yourminis.com.

If you actually visit this blog you will see that I have added a translation bar at the top. Click on one of the flags and after a few seconds you will be taken to the machine translated version.

I checked the Hebrew translation and have to say it was the best laugh I've had since Jay or "Yankel" sent me the following quote from his "Boidem" column, after uncovering yet another of my online identities:-

Ning in Hebrew

I spent a very intensive 3 days translating Ning to Hebrew, so that hopefully I will be able to use it in school. It's more or less done, bar some new privacy features which came out after I received my version of the code and a few gliches caused by the neccessary RTL directionality for Hebrew. If anyone with a good understanding of css is reading this post, I could really do with a helping hand. For my part as soon as the translation is 100% I will make it available to the ning community and of course will credit those who helped make it possible http://inhebrew2.ning.com

I love the summer as I have so much time to "play" on the web. This is the time when I explore, discover and test new applications to see which I may be able to employ in the coming year. I like to try the tools first before introducing them in the classroom, just so I'm as sure as I possibly can be that there will be no "surprises". I have been checking out different applications for digital storytelling. Instead of writing about them I decided to give Bubblehshare a test run. RTL aligned wikispace wiki for Arabic and Hebrew

Wikispaces provide free, ad-free, password protected wikis for K12 educational use.

Until now anyone needing to align their wiki from right to left (Hebrew or Arabic) had to add a special tag around the RTL text. Not any more!

With the help of Dominic Bellizi of Wikispaces, I have created a CSS template which sets a wiki up for RTL languages.

The template and help files including screencast of CSS setup are available at:

The above wiki is in English Language and so is not itself aligned RTL but a working wiki based on the RTL wiki CSS can be seen on the Hebrew demo/help site :

Just noticed the option of adding a classroom 2.0 badge to my blog. There are various useful badges to choose from, however there was no doubt in my mind as to which badge I was going to add.

Not the classroom 2.0 media player which streams videos that have been added to classroom 2.0 - a cool way to add a video widget containing video previewed and recommended by educators.

Definitely Not the stylish music player.

Not even the Classroom 2.0 profile badge that I can "Wear with Pride" on my website or MySpace page.

Oh no, being loyal to the cause I chose to "Spread the word!" and "Get a Classroom 2.0, dynamically updating with the networks most popular members." badge!

Woohoo, finally for the first time in my life, my pic was there among the most popular members! How did this happen? Well either the badge is coded to include the profile picture from the page that calls it, which is a high probability. Or it is simply that I accept nearly every friendship invitation sent me, and Classroom 2.0 members are very generous at sending friendship invitations. Why not? What is a network friend anyway? Indeed, what is a friend? Never having had many friends, I thought I'd look the word up. Most of the results were similar, here is the definition from the "American Heritage Dictionary"

Friend:
A person whom one knows, likes, and trusts. (doesn't quite fit the bill)
A person whom one knows; an acquaintance. (nope..I don't know anyone there, really.)
Friend A member of the Society of Friends; a Quaker. (that must be it!)

These next two feel close to home:
A person with whom one is allied in a struggle or cause; a comrade.

One who supports, sympathizes with, or patronizes a group, cause, or movement: friends of the clean air movement. strike the last bit I smoke 60 a day, but putting the example aside, the definition does seem to describe what is going on at Classroom 2.0. A group of educators, allied in the cause of moving education forward to better prepare their students for the real life that awaits them when they finish school. So that's what a friend is, why don't we just all add each other automatically? I have to say that as a newbie it was very encouraging to be welcomed that way into the community.

Of course there is possibly another reason I am so friendly - my mother's maiden name was..that's right, Friend :-)

Wouldn't you just know it? After that spiel, blogger won't accept the badge code, in the post window, will have to add it as a side widget instead. The things I am willing to do for the cause....

An alternative to Ning? Run your own social network. I'd be interested to know what others think of the application. Last time I tried, uploading video took too long and caused a time out. However the blog features are interesting, members can create text, video or audio blogs right from inside the site. Group creation is also possible as are both user and media moderation. The app also includes member profile page, message boards/forums and widgets that can be embedded in other websites and blogs.
My biggest problem is the Google Ads Box which is slap bang at the top of every page. (I may have mentioned before that the ads that appear in Hebrew are often quite unsuitable for en educational setting.)

I've set up a test site if anyone wants to just try it out for size.

Blogger in Draft - video upload capabilities

Liking to think of myself as an "early adopter" I clicked on the link to blogger in draft in my blogger dashboard and discovered that I can now upload videos, add polls and also create "enclosures", the latter is still a bit unclear to me but hey, if I can upload videos here then sounds good to me. I confess, I'm a bit of a web junky. This isn't helped by the fact that I teach technology at school and admin 2 school websites.

I find that the better part of my day and night is spent on the web looking for that "perfect" tool. The one that does everything and does it in Hebrew correctly aligned to the right!

On my travels through the web I register for any new tool/app? that seems to have promise from an educators point of view. Often these tools offer embed, RSS feeds or "publish to blog" at the click of a button. Well obviously, I can't be publishing to my "real" blog every bit of waffle that I manage to produce for these test sessions, on the other hand, if I don't test the feature, how will I know if and how it works?

With all my ranting about the Google toolbar, I forgot to mention the one toolbar which I do find useful - the esnips toolbar pictured above.

As you can see the esnips toolbar has different functions to other run of the mill toolbars. From it I can snip and save webpages, take screen captures, record audio, video and upload everything to my esnips account. These uploads can be private or public and embedded into web pages and blogs. Screen captures can be whole or part of page and can be uploaded or saved to disc at the click of a button.
You'll find an esnips audio recording in the sidebar, unfortunately couldn't embed the widget directly into the post here in blogger. But here is the link

Google Toolbar - Finally added it

Let me start by saying I hate adding toolbars to my browser! They fill up my screen and do things I don't want them to do, particularly the dreaded, hated popup blocker.

However since starting this blog I've been looking for a way to post from web pages directly. Blogger used to have a nice little bookmarklet which did just that.
It seems that the new blogger doesn't have a stand alone bookmarklet and so I had to make the choice either continue saving snippets for later or get the bookmarklet which is now packaged along with the Google toolbar.

I decided to go for the latter and so have added the toolbar.

So google have added charts to their spreadsheets, and a gadget generator for 'igoogle' the new spruced up google personal homepage.

Never understood the logic of charts so my example, based on a fictional attendance rota, looks more like wallpaper than anything else - but then this is my sandbox so what the heck!

The gadget generator lets you create one of 7 different gadgets which you can then add to your Google personal homepage. You can also choose to add your gadget to the gadget directory for others to share. It takes 10 days for your gadget to appear in the directory, in these times of instant content creation that seems like an eternity! I wonder if these gadgets can also be added to other web pages. For now here is a screen print of my Countdown to the Summer Vacation - for all teachers and students who are feeling end of year fidgety.

Gadgets you can create: Countdown, Framed Photo - a rotating photo collection (rotation is either daily or on browser refresh), GoogleGram, a different message every day with a cute little picture that updates every day that passes, YouTube Channel, Personal List, Free form (text and picture), Daily Me - current status, what I'm reading, thinking etc. Nearly forgot...you can mail your gadgets to your friends!
